Creation 2019

by Jordi Galí

BABEL is exploring the relationship between gesture and object in relation to a specific environment. BABEL is an ephemeral architecture created for public spaces, built live in front of an audience. The aim of the project is to share a creative process from start to finish with the participants, from the research phase until public sharing.

BABEL takes the shape of a 12 meters high tower, built then handled by 25 people under the spectators’ very eyes. From raising the tower up to bringing it down, the tower every move and oscillation reflects what is happening amongst the group operating on the ground, in strong relation with all these presences interconnected and focused, working together.

BABEL takes place during a 3 day workshop ending with the final performance in the public space. During the workshop, the participants can experiment the different steps leading towards setting up the performance, they get to become familiar with using the materials that are at the core of BABEL and engage a group dynamics.

Thanks to the coordination of wills and efforts, the excessiveness of the project and its utopian dimension become a reality; a technical challenge made possible because every person takes part in the community and becomes responsible of it. BABEL are individuals in action, with their bodies, backgrounds and desires, a deliberately ephemeral reality that only exists the time people are gathered to activate it.

The research process of BABEL consisted of 8 workshops, gathering a hundred of people. A photo gallery recounts workshops and performances.
